about
Avril Patrick is a Métis photographer based in Ottawa, Canada. Her early years in Red Lake, Ontario and Yellowknife, N.W.T. were formative for a strong connection to nature and Indigenous ways of living on this land called Turtle Island. It was in Yellowknife that she picked up her first poloroid camera and created images of people in their environment. Her father, Allen Patrick, was an environmental control engineer and travelled extensively throughout the arctic and the rest of Canada. He photographed miners underground as part of his work. It was the exposure to her father's portraits of Canadian miners that she developed a passion for photographing people in unique environments around the world.
